Vita Pauley
March 2026
Vita Pauley’s journey into endurance sports didn’t begin until her 50s, but her story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to try something new, and find new community and purpose.
Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, Vita spent 30 years working for McMaster-Carr Industrial Supply before retiring. She is the proud mother of two sons: Chase, 28, a middle school band teacher in Cobb County, and Drake, 25, a pilot living in Macon.
Vita’s running and walking journey began in 2021 when her sister-in-law set a goal to run a marathon for her 40th birthday and invited Vita to join her. At 53 years old, Vita had never run before but she signed up for the Kiawah Marathon and began training with SoleRoots. It quickly became clear that traditional running wasn’t the best fit for her body so she transitioned to interval training, using a run-walk method. She made steady progress until knee issues forced her to undergo knee replacement surgery in November 2023.
True to her determined spirit, Vita returned to the sport and completed her first marathon using intervals in November 2024. The following summer, she embraced a new chapter and transitioned to speed walking. In November 2025, she completed her second marathon as a speed walker.
Since beginning her journey, Vita has completed two marathons, four half marathons, 11 10Ks, and around 10 5Ks. Her favorite race was her second marathon in Scottsdale, Arizona. Following a training cycle that included incredible support from many wonderful friends, the race itself featured incredible scenery and a great atmosphere. With her sister-in-law by her side, Vita proved to herself that you don’t have to be a runner to compete and accomplish something extraordinary.
Her greatest accomplishment, however, isn’t defined by a finish line; it’s her resilience. After two knee surgeries, including a full knee replacement, Vita learned to meet her body where it is and embrace each season, redefining what success looks like along the way.
These days, Vita is focused on improving her speed walking and continuing to develop her race pace. One of her favorite local routes is the stretch from Castle Playground to Hobbs Farm, especially when the flowers are in bloom.
Vita joined West Georgia Track Club because she wanted to be part of a community that welcomes everyone, regardless of pace or experience. She hopes her story encourages others who may feel intimidated or unsure about joining a running club. “I know how intimidating it can feel when you are not sure if you are fast enough to be part of a running group, but WGTC is so much more than a running group. The people are always welcoming and supportive. New friendships are waiting to be made. If you are on the fence and not sure, give it a try. I am proof that you don’t have to run to be part of the track club.”
Come walk with Vita and other members of WGTC at our next group run! Check out our Monthly Calendar for details.
